Oh FFS. So I’ve been messing around with LibreNMS and trying to setup a NTP server using a PPS signal and have LibreNMS monitor that. Got stumped on the following error:
Error in packet
Reason: (tooBig) Response message would have been too large.
WTF does that mean? Welp, I didn’t have much luck with the ole Goog aside from reading a RFC. Basically the SNMP agent spits that out when it thinks the packet is too big and doesn’t even try to do anything further. Because of this tcpdump/WIreshark won’t show you anything useful. The answer is to NOT use SNMP v3 as that tooBig nonsense is only v3 related. Switching to v2c made the problem (and security) go away. No idea if it will actually get fixed for my specific purpose, but maybe you’ll find this ramble and get yourself back online at least.
